Standard 1 Students Build Big Ideas with Compound Shapes
Our Standard 1 classrooms were filled with excitement and creativity this week as students showcased their understanding of compound shapes through hands on project work. After learning how simple shapes such as squares, rectangles, and triangles can be combined to form new shapes, students were given the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a meaningful way.
Using popsicle sticks, they carefully designed and constructed houses, churches, and beautiful garden scenes. As they worked, students discussed the shapes they were using, counted sides and corners, and explained how their designs were made up of two or more shapes joined together. The activity strengthened not only their mathematical understanding, but also their fine motor skills, collaboration, and confidence.
What stood out most was the pride our young learners showed when presenting their creations. They spoke clearly about their thinking and demonstrated that learning becomes deeper when students are given the space to explore and create.
We are incredibly proud of our Standard 1 students for turning simple materials into powerful demonstrations of learning. Their creativity and growing understanding remind us that strong foundations in mathematics begin with curiosity, hands on exploration, and joyful discovery.
